HOURS OF WORK:Weekdays 3 or 4 hours shifts between 7:00am - 7:00pm
Weekends 10:00am - 1:00pm, 1:00pm - 4:00pm

Position Summary

The role of the GPS Volunteer is to enhance the patient and visitor experience by being available in the high traffic public corridors to answer questions and/or personally accompany patients/visitors to appointments. GPS Volunteers are located near Welcome Desk Volunteers and will work closely with these volunteers. While there are opportunities to sit, most of this work will be walking and accompanying patients throughout the hospital.  


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Proactively greet and welcome patients and visitors in the corridors;
  • Offer wheelchairs to patients who may require one;
  • Assist patients and visitors with wayfinding and when appropriate personally accompany the patient/visitor to their destination;
  • Assist staff with deliveries throughout the hospital as required;
  • With wheelchair, accompany discharged patients from unit to pick up lane at front of hospital.

Experience/Skills/Abilities

  • Demonstrates comfort with initiating contact with patients and visitors;
  • Ability to stand and walk for a substantial period of time;
  • Ability to push a patient in a wheelchair;
  • Is able to provide exemplary attendance even during times of heavy work or school commitments;
  • Respects privacy and confidentiality of patient;
  • Demonstrates understanding and complies with patient and staff safety policies and procedures that foster a safe and inclusive environment for all;
  • Demonstrates behaviours consistent with Mackenzie Health's Commitment to Caring
